BUSY EASTER

BUSY EASTER

It was a busy start to April for Southwark cadets who took advantage of various training opportunities.

PO Cadet Callum Malone attended the ATC Leadership course at Nescliffe near Shrewsbury. It's good to mix with (and spy on) the opposition occasionally. All indications are that it was well organised and enjoyable but not as tough as the Sea Cadet equivalent, obviously.

And for Cadet Laura Spence it was a little closer to home with a week at Feltham SC Unit. During the week she completed the Cook / Steward 2nd class qualification and is now keen to go to HMS Raleigh for 1st class.

Alfie Blackmore and Alexander Smith travelled to HMS Excellent in Portsmouth for the Southern District Easter Camp. With power boating, sailing and first aid there was plenty to do and qualifications to gain. And nothing beats a week aboard the Sea Cadet accommodation ship HMS Bristol.

Representatives of the Tallow Chandlers Company Warden, Sir Christopher Pryke, Clerk, Brigadier Roy Wilde and Warden, Mr Ian Bowden visited Southwark Unit in March.

This was also the evening of the 2012 Royal Navy Parade at which Deputy Area Officer, Lieutenant Commander (SCC) Lewis RNR took on the role of Inspecting Officer.

Dutymen on the evening included N McQueenie (Piping Party), J McBride (Bugler), C Malone (Parade Commander), Ben Wood (Guard Commander), S Cummins, K Andino & A Blackmore (Guard) and T Wood & H Tutt (Signalmen).

The help of parents who assisted UMC Chair Mrs S Stevens with food and drinks was very much appreciated.

WCSIM visit to TS Cossack SCC

It was a pleasure to welcome members of the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers onboard. Visiting were the Master, Mr K Etherington, the Clerk, Mr Neville Watson, and former Master, Captain Guy Brocklebank. A tour of the Unit HQ included demonstrations and Evening Colours was followed by presentation of awards which included Good Conduct Badges for Cadet Smart and Cadet McQueenie. The evening also served as a useful rehearsal for the fast approaching Royal Navy Parade during which the Unit will be assessed for its Authority to Train status for the coming 12 months.
