Success at the South West Area 5-A-Side...

Senior girls from Birmingham Sherbourne, Birmingham Vernon and Walsall Units took the South West Area 5-A-Side Football competition by storm on Saturday 23rd January. There were some hard games played and more than a few injuries as a result of the hard concrete pitches for both girls and boys but they came through to win respectfully.

Highest scorers of the competition for Senior Girls Olivia Dargie from Birmingham Vernon scoring 19 goals altogether and Keegan Burley from Sherbourne taking the title for the Junior Boys.

Next stop the National competition at the end of February.

WISH THEM LUCK!

Mercia District 5 A Side Football - 10/1/2016

What a tremendous start to the year and for ASL Mark Lanes first competition since taking over as CO, on 10th January at the Mercia District 5 A Side Football Competition.

Some of the entrants had never kicked a ball before but were all willing to have a go and support their Unit, but more than that they came away with the medals, the cups and places in the next round at the Area Competition on Saturday 23rd January.

Team Captain AC Sarah Fox and Sandwell Sea Cadet LC Nicole Trevis took the team to a 3 nil victory in the last game to clinch the competition for the Senior Girls. Junior Sea Cadets and Junior Boys also took the trophies home with TS Sherbourne winning overall.

We were lucky enough to have reserves on the Junior Boys Side who joined another unit to enable them to compete.  They were rewarded with a medal their dedication, thank you boys.

Well done everyone, we are very proud of your achievements and looking forward to the next round.

New Officer in Charge - Acting Sub Lieutenant...

Many Congratulations to Acting Sub Lieutenant Mark Lane for taking over as Commanding Officer of TS Sherbourne on 1st January 2016.

A/SLT Lane joined TS Sherbourne as a Junior Sea Cadet at the tender age of 10 and posted the following on his own Facebook page on 1st January:

"On the 31st October 1996 I joined Sherbourne Sea Cadets at the age of 10. Over the next 19 years at Sherbourne I have achieved many things, have had great experiences and have met fantastic people. Today I take on my biggest challenge and I have become the Officer in Charge of Sherbourne".

Sir, we all wish you the very best of luck and are alongside you, supporting you, all the way.

Thank you Chief Rawlinson and Goodbye (for now)

After 5 years of hard work, Chief Petty officer (SCC) David Rawlinson stood down as Commanding Officer of Birmingham Sherbourne on 31st December 2015.  Chief Rawlinson has taken TS Sherbourne from strength to strength, maintaining the 19 years unbroken record of the highest honour of the SCC, a Burgee, for all his 5 years in office.

It has not been easy, Chief Rawlinson has lived and breathed Sea Cadets for all his term and given himself completely for the good of the young people that have come, gone and still remain at TS Sherbourne.  Chief Rawlinson will now have more time to dedicate to himself and his family as well as developing a wider roll within the Mercia District and continuing as an instructor for Canoeing, Seamanship and putting his recently achieved Dinghy Instructors qualification to good use in the existing boats and the new RS Quest too.

Chief Rawlinson will be joining the Royal Fleet Auxillary, staff, UMT and Cadets all wish Chief Rawlinson the very best of luck for the future.

Thank you Chief

Gold Wings For OC Nash

OC Nash is the first Cadet in the District to achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold Wings for Sea Cadet Aviation.

Congratulations on a job well done Jamie.

Jamie's full report in his own words of his experience will appear in the next issue of the Newsletter and is hoped it will encourage other cadets to follow suit.

He did however wish to thank all the sea cadet aviation staff and the instructors from 727 squadron for providing him with such an awesome and helpful experience that has easily helped him decide to pursue flying in the Navy as a career.

Onwards and upwards as they say Jamie!
