HMS Cornwall Visits - 24th and 25th April 2010

HMS Cornwall Visits - 24th and 25th April 2010

On Saturday 24th April, 12 cadets from our Unit were invited onboard HMS Cornwall to join cadets from other units and dignitaries. As the ship was anchored out in Falmouth Bay, the cadets had were taken from Falmouth Docks on the "Enterprise II" to dock with HMS Cornwall. Once onboard, the cadets were treated to a display by the Search and Rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose, followed by a display where they could see and handle the weapons used by the crew (unloaded, of course!). They then saw a "first aid" demonstration of handling a casualty onboard ship followed by a visit to the Operations Room where a simulated attack on the ship took place. They were than given a meal in the Junior Rates Dining Hall before going up onto the deck to watch as the ship entered Falmouth Docks and came alongside.
On Sunday morning, more cadets from our Unit were able to take a look around HMS Cornwall in Falmouth Docks, before the ship opened to the public. We thank our hosts on HMS Cornwall for the experience.

New Central Heating System Installed

New Central Heating System Installed

Over the last two weeks, we have had a new heating system installed, comprising a new gas combi-boiler and new radiators throughout. Our original boiler was showing its age, being less then 65% efficient and well over 20 years old! The new boiler has replaced both our old central heating boiler and our separate hot water boiler, and is very efficient, so we are looking forward to some smaller gas bills!

Southwest Area Drill Competition - 6th March 2010

Southwest Area Drill Competition - 6th March 2010

On Saturday 6th March, cadets from our Unit represented the Cornwall District at the Southwest Area Drill Competition. Given that they only had three weeks to train as an Unarmed Squad (they trained for the District Competition as an Armed Guard), they still came in third place out of nine Districts! A magnificent effort! Congratulations also go to our Squad Commander, L/C Close, for being runner-up in the "Best Squad Commander" category. We would also like to thank all of our supporters who travelled to HMS Raleigh for the competition, and the staff and helpers that made it all happen.

Visit to 849 Squadron - 17th February 2010

On Wednesday 17th February, 14 cadets from our Unit spent the day at our affiliated squadron at RNAS Culdrose. The cadets were invited along based on how much they had supported the Unit at all the fund raising events during 2009. The day consisted of tours of the squadron, flights in the Seaking MK7, a visit to the Flight Deck Operations simulator where the cadets all had a go at directing an aircraft to land on a ship deck, and the day finish off with a tour of a hawk jet.
