Monday 06th February 2017, the Youth Theatre at the Oasis Academy was the venue of choice to hold the postponed 2016 Cadet Annual Award Ceremony.
The band opened the show with a short set performed by the newest members of the band with the majority being Junior Sea Cadets and some who have only joined the band this year. A great effort from them all well played.
After a few domestic notices and course adverts, don’t forget there are literally hundreds of opportunities for our cadets to attend courses in dozens of subjects at other exciting venues, so if you want a new challenge as a cadet or for you cadet speak to a member of staff at the Unit.
We moved on to the main event, firstly cadets were presented with qualifications and awards that they have worked for and been awarded over the last few months, these included Catering, First Aid and a first for the Unit an Home grown Musicians Award, finishing with the presentation of two Btec Awards.
The Officer in Charge Sub Lieutenant (SCC) Bassett RNR then presented the annual awards, some of which are voted for by the Unit Staff, some by the Cadets of the Unit and some are just awarded on statistical data recorded over the year.
The awards presented varied from The Best Musician for the band, to the Best Dressed Male and Female Cadet, Best attendance (statistically), the Mayor’s Oar for Boating awarded to the cadet that is the Highest achiever in afloat activities, The CPO (SCC) Curtis, Citizenship Award for commitment and activity in Community events attended by the unit.
The Grand Finale of the Awards in any year is the awards that are voted for by the Unit Staff, being the Best Junior Sae Cadet of the Year and the Best Sea Cadet of the Year. Then the cadets vote for the Cadet’s Cadet of the Year.
An evening of great celebration of achievement by the cadets of Southampton and we will be back in 2017 to celebrate the achievements to come from this year.
