Captain Matthew Flinders

Captain Matthew Flinders

Yesterday, Dunstable Sea Cadets were invited to represent Eastern Area Sea Cadets at the re-interment of Captain Matthew Flinders in Donington, Lincolnshire. Captain Flinders was a naval explorer, who lead the irst circumnavigation of Austrailia, then known as New Holland and credited as the first person to utilise the name Australia to describe the continent.
He died in London in 1814 and was buried in St James' Burial Ground, Camden, but the exact location was lost by the mid 19th Century, and was thought to be under Euston Station. During the excavation of the burial grounds as part of the HS2 Project, his coffin was located and yesterday saw him laid to rest in the village of his birth.
Cadets were there to line the route as the hearse arrived with Captain Flinders.
Well done to all involved.

Well done to the cadets from Dunstable Sea Cadets, who lined the entrance to Priory Church for the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire's Annual Service of Thanksgiving. The cadets piped the Lord Lieutenant into the church on her arrival. We received numerous comments from the VIPs present about how smartly turn out they were. A credit to the unit.
